Salers,
one of the most beautiful villages in auvergne ...
The Grand Pays de Salers, a land of stone and wide-open spaces, located between the Dordogne and Puy-Mary, offers its visitors a warm welcome. On the programme: a historical and architectural heritage of rare richness and a unique natural environment offering, in summer and winter, numerous outdoor activities (hiking, trail, mountain biking, road cycling, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing...).
Situated above the Maronne valley, at the entrance to the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, Salers is a real architectural jewel classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France.
You will be transported from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance period. Salers did not escape the invasions during the Hundred Years' War, and it was in this context that the "Sagraniers" fortified their town to protect themselves from the English and the brigands, as the Belfry Gate and the Martille Gate, the last vestiges of this period, still bear witness to today.
At the end of the 15th century, Salers acquired the status of chief town of the bailiwick of the High Mountains of Auvergne: bourgeois families settled there and built beautiful residences with turrets which still illustrate its past grandeur today: the house of Bargues, with its finely sculpted lava stone balcony; the Renaissance house of the Commander of Mossier, known as the Templars, with its gothic style gallery and symbolic sculptures; the house of La Ronade, whose foundations date back to the 13th century; the house of Flogeac and its turret; the house known as the Bailliage and its two corbelled towers; the house of Blaud-Lacombe, the house of Bertrandy... A characteristic architecture of a black volcanic stone building, decorated with Lauze stone roofing. A real postcard setting... Salers is also rich in religious heritage: the church of Saint-Mathieu, classified as a Historic Monument, contains some very beautiful 17th century Aubusson tapestries, as well as a polychrome Entombment dating from 1495. The region offers so much to visitors curious to discover more, between nature and heritage, such as the following sites and activities which should not be missed: Le Puy Mary, the Monts du Cantal, Tournemire and the Château d'Anjony, the Puy Griou, the Falgoux valley, the Chapelle de Fontanges, Aurillac...
