SALERS, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES IN AUVERGNE ...

On the program: a rare architectural heritage and a unique natural environment offering in both summer and winter, many outdoor activities (hiking, trail, mountain biking, road cycling, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing .. .).
Located above the valley of the Maronne, at the entrance of the Regional Natural Park of Auvergne Volcanoes, Salers is a real architectural gem classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
You will be transported from the Middle Age to the Renaissance. Salers did not escape the invasions during the 100 years war, it is in this context that the "Sagraniers" fortified their town to protect themselves from the English and the brigands, as still testify today the door of the Belfry and the door of Martille, last vestiges of this time.
At the end of the 15th century, Salers acquired the status of chief town of bailiwick of the Hautes-Montagnes d'Auvergne: bourgeois families settled there and built beautiful turreted mansions that still illustrate its past greatness today: the house of Bargues, with its lava stone balcony finely carved; the Renaissance house of the Commander of Mossier, known as the Knights Templar, with its Gothic style gallery and symbolic sculptures, which houses the history museum of Salers and its popular traditions; the house of Ronade, whose foundations date back to the 13th century; the house of Flogeac and its turret with cut sides; the Bailliage House and its two towers; the Blaud-Lacombe house, the Bertrandy house ... An architecture characteristic of a black volcanic stone building, embellished with Lauze roofs. A true postcard decor ... Salers is also rich in its religious heritage: the Saint-Mathieu church, classified Monument historique, contains very beautiful seventeenth century Aubusson tapestries and a poly-chromium tomb dating from 1495. The whole region is open to visitors curious to discover more, between nature and heritage, here is a sample of sites and activities not to be missed: Le Puy Mary, the Monts du Cantal, Tour -nemire and the Château d'Anjony, the Tours de Merle, the Puy Griou, Aurillac ...
